Decoding Hypothyroidism: A Guide to Causes and Early Symptoms

Hypothyroidism is a type of thyroid disorder which occurs due to thyroid inability to secret thyroid hormones i.e., T3 and T4. These are hormones are essential for various functions in the body like metabolism, mood stability, weight management and hair fall. Due to its deficiency, it will lead to a lot of dysfunctions in the body. They are various causes for hypothyroidism.

  • Iodine Deficiency: A lack of iodine in the diet can impair thyroid function, as iodine is essential for hormone production.
  • Congenital Hypothyroidism: Some babies are born with an underdeveloped or malfunctioning thyroid gland.
  • Autoimmune Disorders (Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis): The most common cause, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, reducing its ability to produce thyroid hormones.
  • Pituitary Gland Disorders: If the pituitary gland fails to produce enough thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), the thyroid may not produce enough hormones.
  • Pregnancy: Some women develop hypothyroidism during or after pregnancy called as gestational thyroid dysfunction. Often due to autoimmune issues.
  • Radiation Therapy: Radiation treatment for cancer, especially around the neck, can damage the thyroid gland.
  • Medications: Certain drugs, like amiodarone used in arrhythmias, can interfere with thyroid hormone production.
