Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that infects people with low immune systems, the elderly, and small children. It can cause illnesses ranging from minor cold-like symptoms to serious respiratory infections.

It was in 2001 that HMPV was first discovered, twenty years ago. Although this virus is less contagious than COVID-19, it can still be prevented by taking the appropriate precautions, such as wearing a mask, covering one's mouth when coughing or sneezing, and routinely washing hands with soap.

1.What is HMPV virus?

  • HMPV is a type of virus which mainly targets on respiratory system, which mimic sneeze and cold like symptoms. It is caused mainly by Human Metapneumovirus.

2. What are HMPV symptoms?

The HMPV symptoms will be based on the severity of the virus, from mild to moderate.

  •         Cough
  •         Runny nose
  •        Fever
  •         Shortness of breathing
  •         Headache
  •         Wheezing
  •       Sore throating

These HMPV symptoms may differ with person to person.

3. How HMPV virus spread?

  •      Airborne droplets: if any infected person sneezes; talking, tiny droplets of saliva with virus spread to others.
  •      Direct contact: when any infected person touches the doors, switches, tables. The traces of virus will attach to the respected object and spread to another person.
  •      Close contact: It will happen mainly while hand shaking or hugging each other.

4. How can the HMPV virus be prevented?

  • Unlike covid, HMPV vaccine is not discovered yet; it has some home care remedies include hydration with juices and water, Steam inhalation using hot water in a bowl will be very effective. For medical care, consulting doctor will be a crucial decision to be taken.

                   In a nutshell, HMPV affects lungs of an individual where they experience a wide range of symptoms with an extend of mild to moderate. Although, transmits through different ways like direct contact, Shaking hands. Moreover, it can be prevented by many ways as mentioned above.
